Pictures from Asia: Part 3, Street Photos

The last instalment of the pictures from Asia is the street photos.  These are just things I found interesting.  Some require a bit of explanation, and some don’t.

These below are pictures from Button Street, an area in Taipei where can find all sorts of buttons, ribbons, fabrics, zippers, yarn, etc:

The pictures below are from a paper museum and paper store.  They have all sorts of handmade papers, and even a facility where you can try your hand at making your own handmade paper:

Near my parents’ house, there is a foot bath pool.  The water is drawn from the natural hot spring in the area.  It’s free and open to the public.  The water is quite hot, apparently with healing properties from the minerals.  My mom said in the winter the pool gets very busy because a hot soak is more desirable in the winter.

I did tell you I had a lot of pictures, right?  Alright, here are some pictures from the Dragon Boat Carnival and Beer Fest in Hong Kong:

If you remember, after my trip to Asia last year, I only posted 3 pictures because I am really afraid of looking at people’s “I’ve been here” vacation pictures.  This year, I said, screw it, and subjected you to so many of my vacation pictures.  If you’re not from Taiwan or HK, I hope you saw something interesting.  If you are from one of those places…dude, I feel very bad for you!

Street Photography final project

After agonizing over my photos for hours, I decided to go with the “pairing” theme, and picked these six photos to present as my term project for the Street Photography class.  All the pictures contain people or objects in “pairs”.  I had the photos giclee printed at a professional lab with the wide borders, and presented them to my class on Saturday.

My teacher liked the top 4 pictures here.  He felt that the bottom 2 didn’t quite make the feel of the series.  I have to agree with him.  I was scrambling to get the minimum requirement of 6 pictures together, so I may have thrown in some that I’m not totally in love with.

Anyway, he really like the top 4 pictures, and I’m pretty sure I passed the course.  It has been a really interesting experience for me to shoot on the street, breaking a lot of the rules  I learned in a studio setting.  I am not likely to ever become a professional street photographer, but I think learning about street photography has made me a more well-rounded photographer.

Sweating over term project

Next week is my last Street Photography class, when we have to present our term project. After shooting over 1,000 photos of the streets of Vancouver, I am at a loss of what to present.

We need to pull together 6 to 8 photos representing “Vancouver, here and now”.  There has to be some sort of thread, or theme, to the photos.  They have to make a series, or a story.  We are required to have these photos printed, and present them to the whole class.

The last time I sweated over a term project was probably over a decade ago when I was still in school.  Oh school.  I remember school.  First it was Langara, then it was SFU.  One time I had to write a term paper on some kind of economic theory, and I started on it so late that I cried the whole time writing it.  I had no idea what I was doing, and didn’t have enough research material to put it together.  I starred at the blank pages for hours and hours, hoping things will just magically come together.

I kind of feel this way right now, looking at my photos blankly, hoping some amazing series will magically come together.

Ha, nothing like some panic over a term project to make me feel young again!

Urban archaeologist

For my Street Photography class, we had to do a series on man-made things–artifacts, buildings, garbage, etc–things that people make and leave behind.  So the focus is less on the people, but more on the indication of presence of people.

I walked from the Waterfront skytrain station all the way to Oppenheimer Park, and here are some of the pictures I took that day.

The day has gone to the dogs

Our assignment for the Street Photography class today was interactions between people and their dogs.  We met up at English Bay to shoot.  It was a gorgeously sunny day, even though it was freezing cold for the 3 hours we were shooting.

This was a fun assignment.  I didn’t get a whole lot of interactions, because most people I asked didn’t want to be in the picture with their dogs.  But I got a lot of super cute dogs’ pictures.

From Commercial Drive to Robson Street

Vancouver is so diverse, even within a few kilometers.  You get the grittiness of Commercial Drive area, to the mix of Hastings, to the poshness of downtown, all within 20 minutes by car.  This makes street photography very interesting in Vancouver.  Here are a few photos of my recent shoots.

Now, I just need to start working on my term project that I really should have started 4 or 5 weeks ago.

Commercial Drive

The street photography class met today on Commercial Drive as our shooting location.  The assignment was called “The Decisive Moment”.  We were supposed to find an interesting background, frame the shot, and wait for something interesting to happen.

Well, that didn’t work too well for me, because I was impatient.  I would frame a background, and wait, and wait, and wait, and then lose my patience.  I’d find the next background, frame the shot, and lose my patience.  So after a couple of hours of this repeated cycle of failure in the pouring rain and wind, I just walked around and took whatever pictures I wanted.

I am so going to fail this assignment.
